Wyandot/Wyandotte Weekend

December 2-3, 2023 / Kansas City

The collaborative team of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, the Wyandot Nation of Kansas and Monumenta presented an exciting weekend of performance, conversation and celebration about the Wyandot Conley sisters.

The new play Representatives for Those at Peace premiered a staged reading, and the new monument-in-development Trespassers Beware: Fort Conley and Wyandot Women Warriors launched. Both creative works commemorate the Conley sisters’ historic legal battle and occupation of the Wyandot National Burying Ground in Kansas City, Kansas, which saved the cemetery from urban development and erasure. Hundreds experienced these dynamic public programs about this iconic story!

Representatives for Those at Peacea staged reading of the new play by Madeline Easley, presented by KCRep's OriginKC New Works program as the culminating event of the inaugural Four Directions Playwright Residency for Native and Indigenous Playwrights. Trespassers Beware! Fort Conley and Wyandot Women Warriors, a panel discussion and project launch for the new monument commemorating the Wyandot Conley sisters’ battle to save the Wyandot National Burying Ground. Trespassers Beware! attendees walked to the historic cemetery and/or view archival works and artifacts from the Conley sisters collection at the Kansas City Kansas Public Library. The cemetery and library are adjacent to each other, and one block from the Hilton Garden Inn. Panel discussion participants and librarian present.
